Hay Bale Sizes Explained

From cubes to 1000lb blocks — understanding which hay format is right for your operation.

Not sure which hay format is right for your operation? Here's a complete guide to hay bale sizes, from small cubes to massive 1000lb blocks.

Hay Cubes (50lb bags) — Compressed blocks of hay, typically 2"x2"x4". Great for horses with respiratory issues (less dust), precise portion control, and easy storage. Available in timothy and alfalfa.

Hay Pellets (50lb bags) — Finely ground and compressed hay. Perfect for senior horses with dental issues, mixing with grain, and small animals. Easy to measure and store.

Small Square Bales (40-60lbs) — The classic hay bale. Easy to handle by hand, great for small operations and backyard animal owners. Standard 2-string format.

3-String Bales (100-130lbs) — Larger, heavier bales preferred by equestrian facilities. More hay per bale means less handling. Consistent flake sizes for easy feeding.

Round Bales (500lbs) — Ideal for cattle and pasture feeding. Use with a ring feeder to minimize waste. Economical per-pound pricing.

Cow Rolls (800-1200lbs) — Extra-large round bales for cattle operations. Maximum economy for large herds.

Large Square Bales (1000lbs) — The most economical format per pound. Requires equipment (tractor/skid steer) to handle. Perfect for large operations.

Which size is right for you? Consider: How many animals are you feeding? Do you have equipment? How much storage space? How often do you want deliveries?
