1st Cut vs 2nd Cut vs 3rd Cut Hay
Understanding the differences between hay cuttings and which is best for your animals.
Understanding the difference between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cut hay can save you money and keep your animals healthier. Here's what each cut means and when to use it.
1st Cut Hay is the first harvest of the growing season. It tends to be higher in fiber and stem content, with more seed heads. First cut is excellent for animals that need more roughage — it's great for digestive health and is typically the most economical option. Cattle and horses that are easy keepers do well on first cut.
2nd Cut Hay is harvested later in the season after the first cutting has regrown. It's softer, leafier, and has a better balance of fiber and nutrition. Second cut is the most popular choice for horses and is what most people think of as "good hay." It's more palatable and nutritionally balanced.
3rd Cut Hay is the softest, richest, and most nutritious cutting. It has the highest protein content and lowest fiber. Third cut is perfect for picky eaters, growing animals, senior horses with dental issues, and animals that need extra calories. It's also the most expensive due to limited availability.
Which cut should you choose? For most horses, 2nd cut is the sweet spot. For cattle on maintenance, 1st cut works great. For rabbits and small animals, 2nd or 3rd cut timothy is ideal.
